James "Jim" Michael Balog, age 76, a lifelong resident of South Amherst, passed away on Wednesday, June 24, 2026.
James was born in Amherst to the late James S. and Mary Ann Balog (nee Smith).
A 1968 graduate of South Amherst High School, Jim was drafted into the United States Army before later enlisting in the United States Marine Corps on September 8, 1969, at Parris Island. After completing boot camp, he was deployed to Vietnam, where he courageously served in ground combat.
Jim enjoyed spending time with his son, taking him trap shooting, traveling to Arizona, hunting deer and small game, fishing, and trapping. He had a deep appreciation for the outdoors and cherished the time he spent pursuing the activities he loved.
Jim's commitment to serving others extended far beyond his military service. He dedicated 30 years to the South Amherst Volunteer Fire Department, beginning as a Junior Firefighter in 1974, rising through the ranks, and retiring as Assistant Fire Chief in 2004. After retiring from Moen Company following 40 years of service, Jim continued working with Lorain City Schools for six years and served on the South Amherst Water Board from 2007 to 2021.
Jim was a proud member of the National Rifle Association, Sportsmens Gun & Reel, one of the first members of VFW Post 1662, American Legion Post 0118, and AmVets Post 47.
Jim is survived by his beloved wife of 48 years, Linda (nee Brooker); his son, James (Shannon McDonald); his cherished grandchildren, Colton and Rowan Balog; his sister, Karen (Ronald) Busser; his special niece, Tia Busser; his nephew, Ronald Busser; and many extended family members and dear friends.
He will be remembered for his unwavering dedication to his family, his country, and the community he faithfully served throughout his life.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.
A Celebration of Life will be held from 1 PM to 3 PM, Sunday, July 19, 2026, at VFW Post 1662, 165 Cleveland Ave, Amherst, OH 44001.
