Obituary

Steven L. Zatroch passed away on March 16, 2025.  Born in Lorain in 1934, he was a resident of Lorain, Ohio and Cocoa Beach, Florida.  Steve graduated from Lorain High in 1952, attended Fenn College, Lorain County Community College and the Ohio State University.  Retired as Captain from the United States Air Force Reserve after 26 years of combined active and reserve service, Steve completed his navigation training at Ellington Field, Texas and later in retirement volunteered his aviation knowledge and skills restoring warbird airplanes and as editor of the air show programs "The Scrambler" at the Valiant Air Command Warbird Museum in Titusville, Florida.

Steve was a skilled tradesman and sheet metal mechanic and retired from the former Lorain United States Steel Metallurgical Department after 28 years.  Steve enjoyed socializing and had many skills and interests; was active in many civic, social and special interest organizations including Amvets, American Legion, Polish Fisherman's Club, Ohio Photographic Stereo Society and was a founding member of the Black River Conservation club.  He belonged to the Ashland Erie Game Association and volunteered for many years as a State of Ohio Hunter Education instructor.  Steve especially looked forward to attending the annual Indianapolis 500 Race with his son and buddies each year, beginning in the mid-nineteen seventies.

After retirement Steve and his wife Shirley moved to Cocoa Beach, Florida and in addition to his volunteer work with the Valiant Air Command Museum, Steve served as photographer for the Cocoa Beach Citizen's Academy, as a director of the Space Coast Art Festival and member of the Camera Club of Brevard County, contributing many photos and articles to various aviation publications.

Steve was a loving husband, brother, father, grandfather and great grandfather.  He was always a very giving and generous soul with a huge heart.  He could embellish any story or joke and make it even funnier when he got himself laughing.  He loved gadgets and was thrilled with his electric wine opener.  Sharing a beer or glass of wine with family or friends was one of his favorite past-times.  He loved his collections of all kinds and tried to get all of us to feel their worth as much as he did.  He knew a lot, about a lot of things and was a master of faking it, if he didn't know.  We will miss him, his holler and his laugh, and his story telling dearly.  Our family has a void in it now, where he used to sit.

Steven is survived by his wife of 69 years, Shirley, his three children, Wendy (Mark) Meincke, Michael (Domini) Zatroch, Jennifer (Tony) Williams, sister Martha McFeaters, his grandchildren, Ethan, Ben, Gina, Sam, his great grandchildren Senna, Talas and Beckett.

A Celebration of Life will be scheduled at a future date.

Funeral Arrangements entrusted to Andras Crematory & Funeral Home, Lorain.
