Obituary

Thomas "Tom" Shaw, 72, of Brownhelm Township, passed away peacefully on Sunday, July 20th, at the Ames Family Hospice House, surrounded by his loving family. He will be profoundly missed.

Born and raised in Sheffield Lake, Tom was the third of six children to Anne and Mickey Shaw. He graduated from Brookside High School in 1971 and furthered his education at Lorain County Community College.

In 1973, Tom embarked on a 42-year career at US Steel in Lorain, starting as a millwright in the pipe mills and concluding his tenure in 2015 as an expeditor in the seamless division. He was a proud member of the Steel Workers Union Local 1104.

Tom's love story began in 1972 when he met his soulmate, Judy Johnson, at Manners restaurant while hanging out with his hot rod friends—much like a scene from *American Graffiti*, as Judy recalls. The couple married on May 24, 1975, and together they raised their two sons on the east side of Lorain. Their life together was filled with adventure and love, celebrating their 50 years this last May.

Tom's passions were a significant part of his identity. A car enthusiast, he had a particular fondness for Chevy Camaros, showcasing his 1967 and 2002 models at car shows and proudly belonging to a Camaro club. His teenage years were marked by the thrill of drag racing at Norwalk Raceway Park. An avid reader, Tom enjoyed legal thrillers and crime fiction, and he cherished watching Cleveland sports with his family. He also loved visiting casinos, mowing his yard on his Dixie Chopper, and spending time with his family and his spirited dog, "Crazy dog Lola". Music, especially classic rock from the '70s, was a joy for Tom as he watched his sons perform live music in the community.

Tom is survived by his beloved wife of 50 years, Judy (née Johnson); his sons, Michael (Maggie) and Matthew (Lauren Rogers), both of Amherst; and his adored grandchildren, Emersyn Shaw, Anderson Shaw, Camden Gross, and Baylor Gross. He is also survived by his sisters, Nancy Sarlie, Sally Lopez (Rudy), Alice Newhausen, Tammy Hack (Mike), and Joyce Johnson (Mike Darmafall); his brothers, William (Emma) and Chuck Parsons; as well as many cherished nieces and nephews.

Tom was preceded in death by his mother, Ann Shaw (née Krieger); his father, Mickey Shaw; his mother-in-law, Nina Johnson; father-in-law, William Johnson; sister-in-law, Sandy Haupt; sister-in-law, Linda Ochenas; brother-in-law, Jim Sarlie; and brother-in-law, Rich Newhausen.

Tom will be fondly remembered by his family, friends, and former coworkers as a loyal, strong, and humorous individual who could fix anything—truly, anything! His family finds comfort in knowing that Tom's legacy lives on through the lessons he imparted, the love he shared, and the memories they will forever cherish.

The family plans to hold a Celebration of Life this fall to honor Tom's remarkable journey.
